This course is designed for experienced Level 2 qualified ultrasonic technicians looking to expand their knowledge and obtain certification in Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT). If you have limited time for full-time classroom training, this blended learning approach offers the flexibility to complete theoretical training online, followed by in-person practical training at your company’s location.

TES Canada brings PAUT training directly to your facility, ensuring a cost-effective and efficient learning experience while minimizing travel and downtime for your team. This course follows BS EN ISO 9712 certification requirements and is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training.

How is This Course Delivered?

Our blended learning package includes:

  • eLearning – Self-paced online modules to be completed before the practical training.
  • On-Site Practical Training & Examination – Conducted at your premises with a minimum of five candidates.

What Will I Learn?

eLearning Modules

The online portion of the training covers fundamental concepts and is structured into six interactive modules:

  1. Basic Principles
  2. Fundamentals of PAUT
  3. Beam Steering
  4. Beam Focusing
  5. Optimizing Data Quality
  6. Review and Knowledge Check

These modules allow candidates to study at their own pace before the hands-on training session.

On-Site Classroom Training & Examination

Once the eLearning portion is completed, our expert instructors will conduct an intensive 10-day training session at your facility, covering:

  • 5 days of PAUT data acquisition
  • 3 days of data analysis
  • 2 days of examination

The practical training includes:

  • Weld inspection techniques
  • Inspection design and instrument configuration
  • Equipment calibration and flaw detection
  • Multi-group inspection techniques
  • Data analysis and reporting

Candidates will receive hands-on training using industry-standard equipment, including Olympus Omniscan systems. If specific equipment is required, please contact us in advance to confirm compatibility.

Certification & Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
✅ Explain the theoretical background of PAUT applications
✅ Correctly select probe and wedge combinations for inspecting welded butt joints
✅ Calibrate and set up PAUT equipment
✅ Detect, locate, and evaluate flaws in welds, heat-affected zones, and parent materials
✅ Analyze scan data to determine defect locations and sizes
✅ Accurately report weld conditions
✅ Differentiate defects from geometric features
✅ Compile written inspection instructions

Successful candidates will receive certification to BS EN ISO 9712 (PCN/CGSB) Level 2.

Course Requirements

  • Candidates must hold BS EN ISO 9712 (PCN/CGSB) Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing certification.
  • Those with previous PAUT training may qualify for a reduction in training hours (subject to approval).
  • A minimum of five participants is required for on-site training.

Training & Experience Requirements:

  • Level 1: 80 hours of training + 1 month of experience
  • Level 2: 40 hours of training (Direct Level 2: 120 hours) + 3 months of experience (Direct Level 2: 4 months)

All candidates must complete the eLearning portion at least 30 days before the practical training starts.
