Time of Flight Diffraction(TOFD) Level 2

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Level 2 Training

Is This Course for Me?

This course is designed for testers, inspectors, engineers, and surveyors seeking a comprehensive introduction to ultrasonic testing of welded joints using Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD). It is also suitable for professionals in the aerospace industry, with specific content available under the Aerospace section.

TES Canada offers TOFD training directly at your facility, providing a cost-effective and efficient learning experience while minimizing travel and downtime for your team. This course follows BS EN ISO 9712 certification requirements and is structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and hands-on training.

How is This Course Delivered?

Our blended learning approach includes:

  • eLearning – Self-paced online modules to be completed before the practical training.
  • On-Site Practical Training & Examination – Conducted at your premises with a minimum of five candidates.

What Will I Learn?

eLearning Modules

The online portion of the training covers fundamental concepts and is structured into four interactive modules:

  1. Basic Principles
  2. TOFD Theory
  3. Flaw Evaluation
  4. Review & Knowledge Check

These modules allow candidates to study at their own pace before attending the hands-on training session.

On-Site Classroom Training & Examination

Once the eLearning portion is completed, our expert instructors will conduct an intensive 5-day training session at your facility, covering:

  • TOFD principles and theory
  • Equipment selection, calibration, and optimization
  • TOFD data acquisition techniques
  • Interpretation and evaluation of TOFD scan data
  • Understanding flaw detection limitations and resolution
  • Digital processing techniques (SAFT, linearization, filtering, averaging, etc.)
  • Compliance with industry standards
  • Comprehensive defect reporting

Candidates will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard TOFD equipment, including Olympus Omniscan and similar systems. If specific equipment is required, please contact us in advance to confirm compatibility.

Certification & Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
✅ Understand the theoretical background and limitations of TOFD applications
✅ Correctly select probe and wedge combinations for inspecting welded butt joints
✅ Calibrate and set up TOFD ultrasonic equipment
✅ Detect, locate, and evaluate flaws in welds and heat-affected zones
✅ Differentiate defects from geometric features
✅ Analyze scan data to determine defect locations and sizes
✅ Apply digital processing techniques to enhance TOFD scan quality
✅ Compile written inspection instructions
✅ Meet BS EN ISO 9712 (PCN/CGSB) Level 2 certification requirements

Course Requirements

  • Candidates must hold BS EN ISO 9712 (PCN/CGSB) Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing certification.
  • A minimum of five participants is required for on-site training.
  • Those with previous TOFD training may qualify for a reduction in training hours (subject to approval).

Training & Experience Requirements:

  • Level 1: 40 hours of training + 3 months of experience
  • Level 2: 40 hours of training (Direct Level 2: 80 hours) + 9 months of experience (Direct Level 2: 12 months)

All candidates must complete the eLearning portion at least 30 days before the practical training starts.
